What is Inflammation?
In simple terms, inflammation is a basic biological response of our immune system to harmful things like pathogens, damaged cells, or toxic substances. Inflammatory processes increase the flow of blood to the affected areas and attract immune cells. Inflammation often manifests as redness, heat, swelling, pain, and sometimes loss of functions. Inflammation can further be divided into acute and chronic. The former is short-term and also necessary while the latter can last for months and is harmful.
Recent studies show that diet plays a major role in managing inflammation. Processed foods, refined sugar, and saturated fats cause heightened inflammatory responses. Alternatively, a diet which is rich in plant based foods helps in lowering inflammation and contributes to better health overall.
There are several ways in which plant-based diets reduce inflammation.
- Full of Antioxidants: Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins like A, C, and E, and other helpful nutrients. These compounds help the body in fighting off harmful molecules that can damage cells and cause inflammation. This in turn helps the body to stay balanced and healthy.
- High in Fiber: Whole plant foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains are rich in fiber, which feeds the good bacteria in your gut. A healthy gut strengthens the immune system and lowers inflammation.
- Less Harmful Ingredients: Plant-based foods as a rule have minimal added sugar and unhealthy fats, which are the main culprits in increasing inflammation. Following a diet which is rich in plant-based foods helps in reducing inflammation in the body.
- Natural Plant Nutrients: Plants contain special natural compounds like flavonoids and carotenoids, which support the immune system and reduce inflammation. People who eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains often have lower chances of getting diseases related to inflammation.

It might seem overwhelming to suddenly start with a plant-based diet but the key point is to start gradually. You don’t have to make drastic changes in your diet. Start by slowly adding more colourful fruits, veggies and grains. Experiment with herbs and spices for flavour. And remember, a plant-rich diet not only reduces inflammation but also supports your heart, brain, and digestion. It is important to prevent long-term inflammation which leads to diseases but the good thing is that food choices and diet can help prevent it. A plant-based diet is an excellent day to reduce inflammation.
